Patents are a moat against builders, not against the two things actually pressing Circle. Visa announced its own stablecoin platform build yesterday, and the onchain float they are all competing over is $306.4 billion, flat on the day and down from $308.9 billion on 23 July. Buying defensive IP while the pool stops growing reads more like a share fight than an expansion. Do those patents cover settlement mechanics or mostly custody and compliance plumbing?
