Monzo is reportedly in talks over a potential sale to Brazilian digital bank Nubank at a valuation of around £10 billion, according to Sky News. A transaction at that valuation would bring together two major digital banking businesses from different markets, linking Monzo’s UK banking presence with Nubank’s large Latin American fintech operation. The reported discussions come as digital banks continue to expand internationally and look for opportunities to grow through acquisitions as well as organic expansion. For Monzo, a potential deal would represent a significant development for the UK fintech, while for Nubank it would provide a potential route into another major banking market. The reported valuation also underscores the scale that leading digital banks have reached as they compete with established financial institutions.

How do Europeans really bank, pay & invest in 2026?
If you are in Europe what apps do you use to make payments, bank or invest?
The answer is rarely one app.
Across the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, banking, payments and investing are separate battles. A customer may bank with Monzo or Revolut, pay with PayPal or Google Wallet, and invest through Trade Republic, crypto com or Coinbase.
That matters because the European “super app” thesis has a distribution problem. Owning a current account does not mean owning payments. Winning payments does not mean winning investing. Each category has its own local habits, trusted brands and regulation.
The map is especially clear in investing. Trade Republic tops downloads in Germany, France, Spain and Italy, while crypto platforms still occupy much of the top five. Consumer demand for investing is growing through both traditional assets and digital assets, but the winners vary sharply by country.
The recent French banking licence gives Revolut a stronger base to compete across Western Europe. Yet the bigger opportunity is not to replace every specialist app. It is to become the place where customers can see, fund and move their financial lives, while the best specialist products still do the rest.
